Description

The JBL PhosEx ultra is a filter medium for use in external filters in fresh and saltwater aquariums and in the pond and is used to remove phosphate (PO4) which leads to the formation of algae.

Clean and healthy water
Plant, feed residues and metabolic products deteriorate the quality of the aquarium water. Good water quality is necessary to promote the health of fish and plants in the aquarium. This can be achieved with aquarium filters. The filters suck in the aquarium water and pull the dirt and waste materials out of the water. Filters also offer an ideal habitat for polluting bacteria and can be fitted with various filter materials to achieve a specific purpose.

Undesirable phosphorus compounds
Phosphorus (phosphate) are in short supply in natural waters (0.001-0.01 mg / l). Plants have adapted to this deficiency situation during a long evolution and require very little phosphorus for their growth. Strong accumulations of phosphorus compounds, in the aquarium often 100-1000 times their natural value, often lead to the explosive growth of unwanted algae. Regular control of the phosphate content with e.g. the JBL Phosphate Test Sets PO4 and timely use of JBL PhosEx ultra prevents this danger. Values of 0.5 mg / l can be tolerated in the freshwater aquarium; values of less than 0.1 mg / l should be aimed for in the seawater aquarium.

Besides calcium, phosphorus is the most important component of the bone structure of fish. But phosphorus also plays an important role in many metabolic processes, enzymes and other vital substances, as well as in muscle work. Fish have to meet their phosphorus requirements through food. Live and frozen feed naturally contains a balanced amount of phosphorus compounds.

Simple application
Nitrates and phosphates are the main algae nutrients. If one or both nutrients are removed from the water, algae can no longer grow.

No general statement can be made as to the time after which the binding capacity of JBL PhosEx ultra is exhausted since the number of phosphorus compounds in the aquarium is influenced by many factors: Young, still growing fish excrete less phosphorus than adult fish. High fish stocks cause more phosphorus compounds than less. In aquariums with dense, well-growing plants, more phosphorus compounds are consumed than in aquariums with poorly growing or without plants.

As a rule of thumb, the following can apply: In a 200-litre aquarium that is stocked with 1cm fish per litre of water and is not overfeed, one package (340g) of JBL PhosEx ultra remains active for approx. 5-6 months. However, this should be checked regularly with the JBL Phosphate Test Set PO4.

Application
The mesh bag with PhosEx ultra should be rinsed under running water before first use to remove dust that cannot be avoided entirely due to transport. Then the mesh bag is placed between two filter masses in the filter. It is essential to ensure that there is a layer of JBL Symec filter wadding that is at least 3-4 cm thick in front of and behind the PhosEx ultra to prevent the JBL PhosEx from becoming too dirty and to prevent the possibility that it may still be present Dust particles get into the aquarium. Phosphate levels of 10 mg / l are quickly reduced to less than 1 mg / l. JBL PhosEx ultra should be replaced when increasing phosphate levels become measurable.

For optimal effect, JBL PhosEx ultra requires the slowest possible water flow in the filter. If the flow is not throttled, slower phosphate removal must be expected. PhosEx ultra can cause a slight increase in the carbonate content and the pH value in the early days of use and should, therefore, be used with caution in aquariums with very soft water and pH values below 7.
